The JioPhone, as you must have noticed with market trends has stirred up quite the frenzy in the telecom sector. A smart feature phone with VoLTE for a price of, well it is free. An intelligent feature phone for Rs 0 is the USP of the iPhone. We were expecting other players in the market to come up with something similar. One of the first to do that Is Airtel which has partnered with fellow home grew brand Karbonn to offer a full-scale 4Gsmartphone for Rs 1,399. Which is basically at the price of a feature phone.
A large-scale 4G enabled smartphone at the cost of a feature phone is an excellent deal. Airtel’s partnership with Karbonn is under Airtel’s “Mera Pehla 4G Smartphone” Initiative. Under this scheme, Airtel will partner with more companies to bring affordable 4G phones to the market at the effective price of feature phones. Airtel has stated that this is the first of multiple partnerships that the company is lining up with manufacturers to bring bundled 4G smartphone options to the market.
Both Airtel and Jio require that you make minimum recharges per month to get the refunds that bring down their effective prices. Airtel requires the customer to purchase recharges of Rs 169 per month to be eligible for the returns. Rs 500 will be refunded to the customer at the end of 18 months and another Rs 1000 at the end of 36 months of buying the phone. The Airtel offering provides users with the entire Android experience at a shallow price point. The effective price also favors the Airtel offer over the JioPhone and the user experience on both phones will be vastly different. Which one of the two phones would you go for?
